Master spy

So this is an evening I ran at cubs before covid existed, but I thought I would share it because I'm pretty proud of it! This evening was part of a whole half term of SPY themed meetings, and it covers some of the communicator badge.

We split the pack into 4 teams and gave them a patrol box for each group with a prize inside. The only way to open the boxes is to colour in the correct pattern on their grids. To start the evening, reveal what groups start on what activities and what box is theirs. Give out grids. When they find an answer, they cross it off the grid. There are 5 activities for the cubs to do.

  • INVESTIGATE – set up small tent with ball pit balls inside. One blue ball will have “ARGO” taped on to it
  • MUTE – using whatever means they want, send 3 messages to other team mates on the other side of the room. No speaking. “BOURNE IDENTITY”, “KINGSMAN: GOLDEN CIRCLE”, “TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY”.
  • OSMOSIS – transfer water from one tube to another to get a canister to the top. Canister has code word “NORTH BY NORTH WEST” inside.
  • DECRYPT – translate 3 messages using ciphers and code wheels. “SPY KIDS 2: ISLAND OF LOST DREAMS”, “MEN IN BLACK 2”, “OHMSS”
  • SUSPENSE – smallest cub in group hangs from ceiling and others have rope. Move the hanging cub around a groundsheet to collect boxes with parts of message on. “MISSION IMPOSSIBLE” (we are lucky to have ways to do this safely, possible with a skateboard or similar)

As soon as they have all 9 messages, they take the grid to their box and if their code matches the answer, the box opens with a prize inside.
